A student quoted by Chiang Mai CityLife attends tutoring four to five times a week for 2,000 to 3,000 baht a month, over 7,000 near exams. A 2014 survey found 60.2 percent of high school students tutor because school lessons don't match entrance exams, and a professor says poorer students fear falling behind. KResearch put Bangkok parents' 2012 education spending, including tutoring, at about 22.5 billion baht.

5 ways to tackle it

  • AI agent

Exam Tutor: a free tutor that teaches from the real past entrance papers

The student picks an exam and a weak topic. The agent pulls matching past-paper questions, explains each step in simple Thai, and keeps asking until the student can do it alone. It targets what the entrance exam actually asks, which is the gap school lessons leave.

Build with Claude, past exam paper corpus, Next.js, spaced repetition

  • Camera and vision

Homework Photo Coach: snap a problem, get a hint, not the answer

The student photographs a stuck problem. Vision reads it and gives a first hint, then a second only if asked, never the full answer, so the student actually learns the step that was missing.

Build with Claude vision, hint ladder prompt, mobile web

  • Hardware and sensors

Daily 5 Printer: a receipt printer at the library that prints five exam questions a day

A thermal printer at a community library or school prints five past-exam questions every morning with the answers on the back. Students pick the slip up, do it on the bus and check it later, no data plan or tutoring fee needed.

Build with Raspberry Pi, thermal printer, past exam corpus, cron job, QR to explanations

  • Voice and phone

Say-It-Out-Loud English: practice the speaking part of the exam with a patient partner

The student speaks English with an AI interviewer that mimics the exam format. It gives short, kind feedback on pronunciation and answers, which replaces the expensive speaking class tutors sell.

Build with Whisper, Claude, TTS, rubric from exam format

  • iPhone and Android app

Split a Tutor: find three classmates with the same weak topic and share the fee

Students at nearby schools mark their weak topics. The app groups three to five of them with a freelance tutor or older student, so a 3,000 baht class becomes a few hundred each. Parents see the group, the topic and the price before anything is paid.

Build with Next.js PWA, Supabase, matching on topic and distance, PromptPay QR
