Corner grocers lose customers to a new CJ or 7-Eleven and can't see which items still earn their shelf space

A Pantip post from September 2026 by a small shop owner says that after a CJ opened nearby it discounted heavily and took the customers, and the shop now has almost none even after widening what it stocks. A Government Savings Bank research note (2019) counts 395,006 corner grocers earning about 51,666 baht a month with 21,761 in costs, names new chains as the main problem, and says a POS for a shop with over 1,000 items costs about 54,000 baht (24,000 hardware, 30,000 software). Most shops have no sales record, so changes are guesses.

5 ways to tackle it

  • Camera and vision

Two-Photo Sales: shoot the shelf at open and close, it counts what sold

The owner takes one photo of each shelf in the morning and another at night. Vision counts items in both and reports what left the shelf, so a shop without a POS gets a sales record from two photos a day.

Build with Claude vision, product matching, Google Sheets

  • Hardware and sensors

Scan-and-Sheet: a 300-baht barcode scanner that logs sales to a sheet, not a POS

A USB barcode scanner on a small Pi or phone adds a row to a Google Sheet at each scan, with the price from a list. The owner scans each item as it goes into the bag and sees best-sellers by week for the cost of a scanner.

Build with USB barcode scanner, Raspberry Pi Zero 2, Google Sheets, product price list

  • Voice and phone

Sold Today: say what sold in a sentence and get the weekly best-sellers

At closing the owner says 'sold ten noodles, six eggs, two oil'. The system writes it down and on Sunday reads back the top five and the items that haven't moved in two weeks, in plain Thai.

Build with Whisper Thai, Claude parser, Sheets, TTS summary

  • Data and maps

Price Gap: tag 20 items from the CJ shelf next door and see where they beat you

The owner photographs 20 prices at the chain and in their own shop. The tool lines them up, shows where the chain is cheaper, where the shop is, and prints shelf tags for items worth matching, so discounting stops being a blanket guess.

Build with Claude vision for price tags, comparison table, tag printer or PDF

  • AI agent

Shelf Space Judge: ranks every item by profit per shelf slot and redraws the layout

From the sales counts the agent ranks items by profit per slot, flags the bottom third to cut and the top items to double, and draws a new shelf plan to print, so shelf space follows what earns.
